Hurricane Season Tips

“The approach of the Hurricane season is the perfect time for us to know what is and is not covered.”

The Atlantic Hurricane Season runs from June 1 to November 30. Every year hurricanes rip through the Caribbean bringing torrential rain, flooding, storm surges and devastating winds which destroy homes and lives. The devastation left behind is compounded when we are caught unprepared.

Here are some simple measures which may lessen the impact of these ferocious storms.

Before June 1:

  1. Check your emergency equipment (flashlights, lanterns, portable radios, portable or stand-by generators, batteries). Ensure that they are all in working order.
  2. Trim trees and shrubbery to prevent weak branches from falling onto your house or your neighbour’s house.
  3. Look for weak spots in doors, windows and roofs.
  4. Check for loose and clogged rain gutters and downspouts and repair if necessary
  5. Check all roof vents for proper ventilation.
  6. If you do not have shutters installed, now is a good time to make shutters and to check those that you have stored.
  7. Check your supply of non-perishables and water. Ensure that you are fully stocked.
  8. Locate the emergency shelter in your neighbourhood.
  9. Locate your insurance policy and review your insurance.

Review your insurance:
